6 Months

It is hard to believe that we lost KK six months ago.  I still pick up my phone to send her a text or  scroll through facebook hoping for one of her clever musings.  I see her in so many ways in this world, and I always will, for that I am grateful.  In the past week alone I have encountered the following things that I want to discuss with her:

UVM 15 year reunion.

Jay and Bey shut down the Louvre for a private viewing of Mona.  God we love them.

The Veep visits PDX and stops for ice cream.  She would be all over this story and this photo - the massive cone, the aviators inside...its too good.

Kate Spade and Gap Kids -KK would have been first in line to gear up her beautiful new niece

I also finally started watching Gossip Girl - 7 years later - which she always told me I'd like.  She was so right.

This coming weekend, I will really be thinking of her.  She was supposed to be the bride at a lovely wedding reception in Seattle.  Damn it KK, I miss you.

RIP Steven Smith

I can honestly say that my life has been significantly sweeter because of Steven Smith.  Steven, a Portland guy, founded Tazo Tea, the makers of the very best chai latte in the entire world.  As noted in the Oregonian's coverage of his passing  "He took chai to new levels with ingredients such as ginger root, cassia, black pepper, cloves and cardamom."

I didn't know Steve, but after reading the beautiful piece in the Oregonian, I feel like I did.  What an inspirational life story, right up until the very end.  I cried reading it.

As I drink my chai, with my name misspelled, I smile knowing one thing...I have a best friend in heaven who loves Tazo Chai, and she will welcome Steve.  KK introduced me to Tazo Chai Lattes back in 2000 and I remember details of my first and my last chai with KK.

For the final years of our friendship, we did not live in the same city, but we'd often call or text as we sipped a chai - it was our thing. Thanks Steve. Reading about you makes me believe you created chai for good friendships like ours.  Mission accomplished.

A quick search of this blog proves how much chai and I are intertwined.

HBD KK

KK, today you'd turn 39. Wish you were here. If you were, I would have sent you this Beyonce vase with mirrored hair. I won't bother to send one to you in heaven, because...that place must be crawling with goodies like this.

Lots Of Love, And Forever Missed - A Guest Post

KK's sis in law is fabulous in every way.  So is this post of hers, that I am reposting.  It was originally posted here, on her brave and beautiful blog.  I am not sure what I love more, EA's thoughtful words, or this picture of KK celebrating at her baby bro's wedding.

EA - I just had to share it.  I hate CF with you and for you.  xo

****

I remember being taught as a young girl that the word “hate” was very strong, being encouraged to not use it describing how I feel about a person. I think that’s fair. But over the past number of weeks I have felt a lot of hate. It’s a feeling that I have never felt before, not toward a person, or even a thing.

I have spent some time writing and sharing stories about living with and being married to someone with CF. I try to be positive, optimistic, hopeful, and funny (not sure I’ve succeeded on this last one). Eamonn and I genuinely try to live our lives with these attitudes in defiance of a situation that would seem very bleak. But right now I feel hate because I deeply, passionately hate CF.

I very consciously have not shared much about Eamonn’s older sister, Kate, who also had CF, out of respect for her privacy. However, she was a big influence on how we have learned to cope with the disease and having it motivate us to really live, rather than dragging us down. Kate has been our brightly shining example of living rather than surviving.

I didn’t ever tell her this, but Kate was truly one of the best people I have known, and ever will know. I remember feeling intimidated the first time I met her because she and Eamonn were talking about Star Wars, quoting movies I had never heard of, and I knew right away that she was someone who I really wanted to like me—and not only because I loved her little brother. Her laugh was contagious. Her smile was the brightest thing in any room, and would only make you smile back. She defined what it meant to be a genuinely loving person. But most of all, she was one of Eamonn’s first role models as his older sister. They shared many bonds, one being that they both had CF. For most of his life, Kate was mainly a role model for how to live with exuberance and bring joy to others’ lives. As Eamonn got sicker, her role developed, and she taught him how to overcome challenges, not letting them keep him from living the way he wanted. Simply put, Kate was our hope.

I hate CF, and always will, but that hatred can only go so far. As much as I detest the disease I also know while it never defined Kate and Eamonn, it shaped them as human beings. It’s a part of what makes them such powerful, strong, courageous, and brave people. This world is a little less bright without Kate in it, and it’s hard to imagine our lives without her giggle, her random Facebook posts, her excitement for all things “mini,” and her endless positive spirit. But I know that despite her not being here, Kate’s influence on all of us will last forever.

May is CF awareness month. For the past 7 years, Eamonn and I have organized a team of family and friends to walk in the annual Great Strides Walk. This year, I cannot be there with my team, but they are still walking tomorrow! Please do your part in supporting the CF Foundation by joining team Rock-It-Lungs tomorrow, May 18th at Soldiers Field Road (sorry this is last minute), or donating to our team here.

But don’t just donate because Kate died, or that you hate CF—donate because you don’t want this disease taking one more incredible life.

Binge and Purge

Sometimes O travels.  When he does I tend to binge and purge.

What about the binging?  Let's start with the binging.  Oh, the binging.

Mayyyyybe I'm still on a Gossip Girl kick.  Blame KK for that.  I'm in season 5, and I think I need to see the series through until the end...right...for KK...?  Right.

I also binge read Amy's new book.  Damn is it good.  Yes Please!  Loved this article about the book from the New Yorker that HB shared.
Don't think I could ignore all the buzz about Serial and not get sucked in.  I am all caught up and ready for the next episode.  OMG thank goodness tomorrow is Serial Day, I mean Thursday.  Even the WSJ is talking about it...so its legit yo.  Tuning into a podcast makes me feel like it is the Y2K again.  And if you read Yes Please, Amy P will convince you that time travel exists.  She is so right.  And see how I tied all this together?

Wow that's a lot of content to take in so fast (hello, binge definition, i think).  I can hear you judging (how does she have that much time?).  I don't have that much time...I multitask well.  Anyhoo.  It isn't all media binging over here...I'm also enjoying some binge running (duh) and after just one class I plan to binge on hot yoga over the next few weeks.

Oh, and I have also been binging on work...my brain is thankful for that...it feels so good.  To keep up with my good work (if I do say so) over there, here is another blog for you to enjoy...

As for purging...recent purging was already discussed, in the form of extreme organization.  Those efforts continue, my closet is up next.  I need to make room, lots and lots of room, for Mara Hoffman's new Guatemala-inspired Resort Line.  I am going to order every.single.piece. of this line (in my dreams, in my dreams).

One more purge note, since it is on topic.  I love this National Unfriend Day (#NUD) thing, I missed the big day but it is on my to do list.  Thank you Jimmy Kimmel!  Did you NUD?

Home Sweet Homes

On our recent trip I was able to show the babes 3 of my past homes.  So fun.

Here I am with KK (and P) in front of 210 Babcock.  KK, BMo and I lived here (on the top 2 floors) for a few years after college.  Such good memories.

And here I am with the babes in front of 232 W. Newton - this is the first home O and I owned.  It was tiny and fabulous and prime prime prime location.  Oh I loved that home.

No trip to Paris would be complete without swinging by 65 Rue de Seine.  I had the 3rd floor all to myself for the summer of 2000 and it was ridiculously amazing.

Quince Love

Today I am thinking of my girl KK.  Today (this weekend actually) she celebrates 15 years!  15 years ago she was fitted with a shiny pair of new (to her) lungs.  Yes, lungs.  We were in college and it was intense.  My life is better because she is in it.  I am better because I know her.  She has taught me so much.

Most years, we are together to celebrate her big anniversary.  This year we are not (although we just had Jackson and we'll be together in Boston in April, phew).

In my mind, she is rocking a quince frock like this one around the conservative Boston law firm where she works; this vision makes me smile.

In reality, she is reflecting on how far she has come from 1996 to 2011.  This morning she shared this recent photo, noting how she never could have hiked a mountain back in '96.

Take care of yourselves, be healthy and happy, and please sign your donor cards.

KK, you are beautiful inside and out.  Thank you for being.  xo

We Heart Madeline

Thank you KK for introducing the kids to (and reminding us of) Madeline.  I adore the illustrations and the story, as do the babes!  Merci.

Paris.Besties.Oui.Oui.

It is always best to write a post while things are fresh in your head.  But you can't always do that.  For this particular post, it is actually fun to write it weeks later.  An excuse to dive back into such good, happy memories.  We had an absolute blast.

The trip was bittersweet.

The bitter: It was originally planned for my mom, sis and I to celebrate big sis's 40th.  But that damn leg of hers had other plans.

The sweet: With my sister's hospital bed blessing, I invited some PDX girlfriends, at the very last minute, to rally to Paris.  And rally they did!

Another bittersweet detail that I can't leave out: Upon my return from Paris, my world was rocked by terrible news.  Having deposited a Paris high into my emotional bank has been so good for my soul as I weather the emotional storm of losing my girl KK.

Before the trip, I spent some time pulling together this little map.  We did almost everything on it.  The places (food, shops, etc.) on it were either places I knew of already, or places I had read about from stephmodo or design sponge (both excellent paris sources). We added some other stops too - L'Orangerie, and some restaurants pictured below.

The following pictures are in no logical order, but they are all fabulous - because you can't take a bad picture on a girls weekend in Paris.

 Great lunch spot: L'eboulliante

 Crepetastic

Gorgeous B girls, on Champs Elysees

Musee D'Orsay

 How we rolled...
 Metro fabulous
 View from mon lit

When your dress matches les fleurs in le jardin du Luxembourg, a photo op is obvious...duh...
Resto Derriere was pretty cool - it should be its own standalone post.  such a funky funny spot, with great atmosphere, lots of quirk, and really good food.  Click that link and check it out.
EW and I at Derriere...so glad she joined us for dinner.  This fab girl lives and works a Paris, of course she knew the cool places to hang.  Deirrere was her idea, so was hotel l'amour (which is a few photos below).  So fun.

 LC atop the tower

 Team Paris St. Germaine
 Maybe this was my breakfast...

 Sur le bateau

 Quiet lunch a la mason...
Girls night out, on a tuk tuk, maybe you saw us on fb?

 Dinner at hotel l'amour

 We all laughed, a lot

Grand finale, an evening out at le moulin rouge.  They don't allow photos inside, although I know someone who snapped a few and if I can track them down I will share.  The costumes and staging was pretty spectacular.

 Our pied a terre

Ooh la la Paris, we'll be back!

Apres Paris, 3/4 of the girls trained back to AMS with me for a super quick tour of my Dutch life.  That post should will be soon...the visit was so much fun.
