Oooh la la

I really enjoyed this article -

The Real Reason You’ll Never Be Able to Parent Like a French Mom.

Which reminds me to give you an update on the real real reason I may never be able to parent like a French mom.

I can't even remember the exact reason why I am not French enough to be French. But I remember leaving the French consulate in Amsterdam in tears.

It was something about how my French husband isn't French enough. Despite having a French passport himself, and piles of very detailed French paperwork...there is some certificate that is missing from his file which I would need to have in order to become french. I can get it, and I will...but I am giving myself a bit of a break from this exhausting process. If I know anything about this process, I know that getting that little certificate will not be fun, or easy.

A fun sidetone, my test results have since expired. Which means that if and when I do track down that little certificate, I'll get to take the test again. Taking the test is a humbling experience.

I look forward to my next attempt. That last sentance was a lie.

Funny Confession #275

Tomorrow is a big day.  My big test.

Below, in no particular order, is the list of things I have done to prepare:
  • nothing
  • nothing
  • nothing
  • nothing at all
  • zip
  • cleared my schedule for a few hours today to prepare
  • thought about preparing
  • wondered how to prepare
  • talked about preparing
  • nothing
  • more nothing
I know, I have been busy, right?

Below is a list of things I have done to procrastinate today:
  • run
  • chai
  • picked up toys
  • worked
  • this blog post
  • those last 2 blog posts
  • put on this confident outfit

Below is a list of what I will do to be prepared by tomorrow:
  • watch this video like 100 times
  • take a french kid with us to football and talk to him in french
  • read some french emails that came from school that i haven't read yet because they are in french
  • pick out a super cute don't-i-look-tres-french kind of outfit to wear for the test
  • find "pardon my french" shirt pictured above to wear under said outfit
  • read a french book to the kids before bed
  • day dream about my fete
  • buy a baguette
  • research things to do in paris, since i will be there next weekend

Oooh la la...funny stuff...

This article had mes amies and me LOL-ing.  It explains so much about the mommy dynamics at the French school...

There are good odds that some of the french mommies find this mommy to be "a little disgusting" because I roll in Nike gear 98% of the time.  Often because I am on my way to or from a run...but often just because...

"Parisians find Americans who 'hang out' in their sweats, even to run an errand, a little disgusting."

Perhaps I am also un peu "horrifying" with my cupholder...

"In Paris, the very point of coffee is that you sit down and take a break. You don’t walk around with a giant vat, fueling yourself throughout the day. Parisians find this amusing and horrifying, as they do the fact that everything in America, even baby strollers, comes equipped with a huge cupholder."

No matter what my test results say, I will probably never really be french.  Duh.  I am quite ok with that.  God bless the USA, my sweatpants, and my cupholder!

Une Autre Belle Fete

As you know, French-themed fetes always remind me that I need to keep pushing ahead with the complex effort to obtain French citizenship.

The photos from this sweet party are good motivation.

The latest update on this effort: O has really taken control of it because the Consulate has made it tres tres clear to us that they only want to work with the French spouse (fine by me!). We are making progress...I hope we can have citizenship for the babes this year, and next year we will try for mine.
La belle Amelie is helping us with some of the more complex documentation while she is here. She is cool like that.

French Revolution

A maman at the school started a little running group. And suddenly it is a big running group. I don't join often for their group runs, but when I do they are welcoming and colorful. I love the running and the french language immersion. In true French style, the run involves coffee (before and after), is never rushed, and smoke breaks are permitted. #culture.

Photo credits all go to mon amie ND, who is never sans camera. Merci.

French Summer

I hope none of you spend a moment worrying about what our slopeside french family does once ski season is over.  I assure you, they continue to live une belle vie.  The week after our visit, they headed south to their home in Sanary, where they run a parasail business for the warm months.  This family works hard, but they have made a lifetime of wise choices to ensure they live the life they want to live.  It is so inspiring.  O and I talk about them so often.  I believe all that stuff about how we can make our own luck and about how we can choose happiness.  These guys live it (remember tonton Gilles's shirt - Life is Fantastic - he exudes that sentiment).  If you are ever in southern france, take a ride with them!

O's sweet Grandmother Mamie lives in Sanary as well.  I adore this shot of Amelie visiting with her and giving her a mani.  So sweet.

Pro Tip

If you ever take a test designed to confirm that you are fluent in French, you should not do any of this.  Instead, you should probably just be fluent in French.

I will find out for sure in 3 weeks...but I'm pretty certain yesterday's effort was a humbling failure.

La Fete is on hold...indefinitely.

Fete Nationale

Today is Bastille Day.

Like the good French family that we are, we celebrated with the other local frenchies at the Portland party on Saturday in the Pearl (BryGuy took some pix, which I will share when he sends them along).

All of the French-ness reminded me of the time I spent in France last summer for work. I was in such a beautiful location (Albi). Too bad it was all work all the time. However, I did get some good pix, see below.

The town of Albi...

My hotel...

And bien sur a biz trip to France would not be complete without a weekend a Paris...

Oh la la...life has changed so much from last summer (4 business trips to France and Finland) to this year (Baby F, Baby F, Baby F, Baby F). Love love love-ing it!

Expat 4th

July 4th came and went...and it was so much fun!  Not only was it the last day of school...but our great friends hosted an all American (and Dutch and French) celebration.

HB - how is it possible that of all the photos...I can't find one of you?  As soon as I find one I will update this post.  Thank you for hosting...we will always remember this party, so much fun!

3 boys with sparklers are below...and just below them are their papas...July 4th was bittersweet for all of these Frenchies...they loved celebrating USA style, but hated watching the French team lose their World Cup game...

This is how Princesses make s'mores, pink bbq and all...LOVE

I've told you about dutch stairs before...my friend HB explains it all better...

These two...such good buds...melt my heart...

Tis the Season

The holidays are coming at us faster than we can celebrate.  There are more holidays crammed into the season over here than we had in the states, plus we jam in 2 december birthdays (mine and P's) and one milestone anniversary (10 years this month!!!).

It all started back at Halloween...which was pretty magical over here.  The expat community does it up, we take over an entire (large) neighborhood.   It was really well organized and we rolled out with a big crew...it was special and beautifully american with a dutch twist.  Several frenchies from school rolled with us, it was fun to watch french kids experience an american tradition in amsterdam.  The holiday was even more special because it aligned with a bday party, so we could have cake and candy and costumes all at once.  My friend LL throws ridiculously good parties too...so her son's 4th was a blast.

Not even 2 weeks after halloween, on November 11, it was Sint Maartin, which is a dutch version of something like halloween. It involves homemade lanterns, adorable singing, and lots of candy. Of course we had to participate!

Below is our upstairs neighbor and friend.

It was a major event on our block, it was incredible.  100s of kids at our door...singing songs and taking candy.  My kids shocked me by knowing several Sint Maartin songs (a requirement if you want candy) - they were awesome.  If you like adorable dutch children and/or adorable american children singing in dutch - be sure to take a minute to enjoy this video.  The catchy tunes are still stuck in my head, a full month later.

After viewing the video above, you must be dying to know how to make a lantern.  Luckily, WKF created this easy to follow tutorial - bookmark this for next year...you'll want a lantern on November 11!

Ok fine, one last video.  When these darling girls realized we were american, they selected a special song just for us.  I never liked miley cyrus until this...

We barely had time to enjoy all of the Sint Maartin loot, and then Sinterklas rode into town (first by boat, then by horse) all in a grand parade that went right by our street.  His arrival and 3 week stay has not been without controversy.  We have managed to navigate around the controversy, trying hard to see both sides and or just respect the various points of view and enjoy the positive and sweet (yummy pepernoten!) elements of the traditions.

Legend tells us that Sinterklaas hangs around for 3 weeks (from the first Saturday after Sint Maartin through til Dec 5 (today) ).  During this period, if you leave a carrot in your shoe his horse (Amerigo) will eat it and in turn Sinterklaas, his helpers, and his horse may leave a little present (a cadeautje in dutch) in your shoe.  Then, today (Dec 5), Sinterklaas comes to each home with a big gift for any girls and boys that are good.  The bad kids get collected in a burlap sac and taken away to spain (yikes, they don't mess around!).

My mom, who is on the ball, gifted us this book which has been helpful.

Even with the book it all gets confusing.  Especially when the French School talks to our kids about Saint Nicolas...which makes all of us wonder the differences between Sinterklaas, Saint Nicolas and Santa.  According to WKF, you can ask all 3 dudes for what you want, and if you are good you get it all...so, he has been maintaining 3 wishlists and it is kind of making my head spin.  Do we leave carrots for horses in our shoes and still leave cookies for reindeer...but what if each eats the others treat?  And a lump of coal in the stocking doesn't seem too bad compared to being kidnapped in a burlap sac and taken to a foreign land.  It is really hard to keep all the stories straight and to set and deliver on expectations while still maintaining traditions of our own (advent buckets, skiing on xmas day, stockings, etc.)!  We have exciting travel plans as well...so the kids are really concerned about if/when/how santa/sinter/saint nicolas will even find us.  I share their concern, while never for a moment losing site of the fact that this season really is magical in any language, country, culture!  We are savoring and believing in all of it!

Longest post ever and I didn't even get to Thanksgiving yet.

Celebrating with La Famille a Vars

The slopes and the food were ridiculously good, but the holidays in Vars were all about family.

Uncly Ry was with us.  It was so fun to spend time with him on the snow, and to share Vars with him.

Team Nixon was with us.  The coolest family we know, we are so glad they are ours.  We love that they rallied all the way from Park City to be with us for the holidays.  They say they were motivated by last year's video...so cool that they took that inspiration and made it happen.  LOVE.  French alps sure look good on them...should we do it again soon??

Our Vars family was there, being fab hosts as always.  Their cousins were there, and their cousins cousins, and their parents...and in our family that means we are all family.  We were surrounded by love and laughter and snow and sun...and eclairs.  Fa la la.

Together, with family, we celebrated xmas with the annual Vars spectacle, and a visit from Pere Noel.

We went to torchlight parades, cousin Gabby even got to participate...like a true french ski instructor.

And we celebrated a lot of every day moments, Vars style...like lunch in slope side chalets
 Cousin snuggles

Playmobile sessions...

 A lot of uno...
 Dinners in
 Bed time stories

Playing in the snow...

Staying up late to giggle
